Keep Diabetes at Bay

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, not a disease. This is due to insufficiency of insulin production by Beta Cells of islets of langerhans of the vital organ ” Pancreas “.

There are two types : IDDM (Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) NIDDM (Non-Insulin Depenedent Diabetes Mellitus)

Diabetes can occur to anyone and at any age- Children to adults. Child diabetes is called Juvenile Diabetes. Normally it occurs in adolescence after 35 to 40 years of age.


People with NIDDM are generally asymtomatic. Its symptoms are extreme thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, delayed healing of wounds,impotency,infection due to low resisitance, feeling of tiredness or weakness, confusion and itching especially in unexposed parts of the body. However ,all symptoms do not appear in concurrence.


If blood sugar remains high and untreated, it can cause damage to the blood vessels and nerves, heart disease , kidney failure and also foot problems. Circulatory disturbances are quite coomon giving rise to knee joint pains and numbness in the extremeties.

Low blood sugar is also dangerous causing hypoglasmic effect and later coma (Diabetic coma) . Constipations is another major problem. So it has paramount importance to keep blood sugar always under control. The normal blood sugar values are :

Fasting                around +/- 90

Post Lunch         around +/- 130

Random              around +/-  75

The only solution is proper diet and daily practice of yog.

First priority is to observe the diet, which plays major role.

Food for thought : Take food (diet) as a medicine . Food is classified as Rajsic, Tamsic, & Satwik. The Satwik clicks well. Whatever you eat, less and live more.

Food should be masticated well before swallowing which improves digestion.

Measured , restricted diet, same quantity is to be taken daily and timely. Better half-cooked vegetable be taken, more especially leafy vegetables.

Coffee or tea should be avoided as far as possible. Sweets, chocolates , coconut, fats and dairy products should be avoided. Roasted food and dried fruits should also be avoided. Cooked food should be taken twice daily. Chapati prepared of wheat , gram and barley in equal quantity mixed with smashed green leafy vegetable would be useful. Third time a seasonal fruit can be taken alongwith buttermilk. Buttermilk should be of medium consistency neither thick or thin. Avoid smoking and alcohol which would precipitate. Do not take water in between meals but take half-an -hour before or after. Take salads before meals to minimise water intake. Salads include cucumber, karela, tomato (without seeds) , cabbage, salad leaves, leaves of dhaniya,spinach,raddish,carrot, onion, etc. Relax while you eat , slow down and chew your food fully. Do not be in a hurry. Urination after meals is very useful for health.

Fruits to take :  Orange, Black Jamun, Guava besides mosambi and apple

To avoid : Custard apple, mango,sapota,, banana, figs and grapes . Fruits , not juice to be taken regularly for better health and to avoid constipation.

Daily sufficient water is to be taken. Take regularly one spoon methi seeds with warm fresh lemon water mixed with half spoon of honey while chew 12 to 15 black pepper seeds to reduce obesity. Try to take 50 gms of raw carrot which contains insulin like hormone Tocokinin.

Diabetics should follow the instructor carefully to do as many asanas as possible and in particular the following asanas :

Surya Namaskar, Navasana, Janushirasana, Konasana, Ardhmatsyendra asana, Padothanasana , Halasana, Matsyasana with perfection for maintaining excellent health. Following pranayama may also be added to get excellent result :

Agnisar, Kapalbhati, Bhramri, Sheetli, Deep – long breathing, Anulom-Vilom
