HICCUPING

Hiccups are involuntary sudden sounds made by spasms of the diaphragm muscles. The diaphragm, a large sheet of muscle suspended beneath the lungs, helps us to breathe. The muscular contraction of these muscles sucks air into the lungs, and the quick inhalation makes the epiglottis crash shut. The epiglottis is a flap of tissue that closes over the windpipe during swallowing to prevent the inhalation of food, fluids or saliva to the windpipe. This sharp closure of the epiglottis causes the characteristic ‘hic’ sound of hiccups. Irritation of the nerves that extend from the neck to the chest can cause hiccups. They are usually harmless and resolve by themselves after a few minutes.

Prolonged hiccups that last for days or weeks may indicate a disorder. Although associated with a variety of ailments such as pneumonia, hiccups can also be caused due to presence of unwanted substances formed in the blood due to kidney malfunction.

Effects on body

  1. Eating too much food too quickly and eating spicy food.
  2. Drinking too much alcohol.
  3. Smoking or swallowing too much air at a time.
  4. Children feeling hungry take feed hurriedly start hiccupping. Sometimes it is an indication of good digestion and gradual growth of diaphragm.
  5. A sudden change in stomach temperature, such as drinking a hot beverage and then a cold beverage can cause hiccups.
  6. Emotional stress or excitement may initiate hiccups.
  7. Hiccups are sometimes thought to be a reflex to protect a person from choking.
  8. A baby may hiccup after crying or coughing. This is common in babies in the first year.
  9. Hiccups prolonged may be due to strokes, brain tumors and some chronic medical disorders(such as renal failure), Oeso-phagitis (inflammation of the oesophagus), An overactive thyroid gland, Pleurisy (inflammation of the membrane surrounding the lungs), Pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs), kidney disease, brain damage ,such as stroke or tumor that affects the area of the brain which controls the diaphragm, abdominal surgery, chest surgery, certain epilepsy medications.
  10. Some medicines may have side effects of hiccupping.

Remedies

The hiccups will usually stop by themselves but there are many remedies to stop hiccups. We can apply these methods to get rid of hiccups :

  1. Hold your breath for some time.
  2. Drink a glass of water speedily.
  3. Place one-half teaspoon of dry sugar on the back of the tongue(Repeat this process 3 times at 2-minute intervals)
  4. Swallowing a table spoon full of honey.
  5. Certain body points may be pressed to stop hiccups. One quick cure for the hiccups is to press the point beneath the ear lobes while taking several slow deep breaths . Second is by pressing and rotating your index horizontally directly below your nose. Thirdly pressing in the middle of the shoulders. Lastly at the base of the throat in between the collar bones. Press these areas daily for a few days regularly if the hiccups continue.
  6. Warning : Pressing points should be avoided by pregnant and heart patients. Don’t press or massage sores ,cuts or scratches. Allow at least an hour before or after eating.
  7. Taad aasana, Triak tad asana, Surya namaskar, trikon asana, dhanur asana should be performed regularly, if hiccups are frequent.
  8. Kapal bhati, Agnisar and Palavni Pranayam are helpful to check hiccups.
  9. Vaayu mudra, if performed for sixteen minutes can help.
  10. If hiccups is a chronic problem , Shankh Prakshalan should be performed once a month for at least three monthshiccups

The Woman : She forgets what she is worth

When God created woman He was working later on the 6th day. An angel came by and said : “ Why spend so much time on that one ?”

And the Lord answered : Have you seen all the specifications I have to meet to shape her ? She must be washable, but not made of plastic, have more than 200 moving parts which all must be replaceable and she must function on all kinds of food,  she must be able to embrace several kids at the same time, give a hug that can heal anything from a bruised knee to a broken heart and she must do all this with only two hands.

The angel was impressed. “ Just two hands ….imposssible ! And this is the standard model ? Too much work for one day….wait until tomorrow and then complete her”

“ I will not “, said the Lord. I am so close to competing this creation, which will be the favorite of my heart. She cures herself when sick and she can work 18 hours a day “.

The angel came nearer and touches the woman “ But you have made her so soft, Lord “.

“ She is soft” said the Lord, But  I have also made her strong. You can’t imagine what she can endure and overcome.”

“Can she think ?” the angel asked

The Lord answered : “Not only can she think, she can reason and negotiate.”

The angel touched the woman’s cheek. “Lord , it seems this creation is leaking ! You have put too many burdens on her.”

“ She is not leaking….its a tear” the Lord corrected the angel

“What’s it for ?” asked the angel.

And the Lord said, “Tears are her way of expressing grief, her doubts ,her love, her loneliness, her suffering and her pride.”

This made a big impression on the angel: “Lord, you are a genius. You thought of everything . The woman is indeed marvelous ! “

“Indeed she is ! Woman has strengths that amaze man. She can handle trouble and carry heavy burdens. She holds happiness, love and opinions. She smiles when feeling like screaming. She sings when she feels like crying, cries when she is happy and laughs when she is afraid.

She fights for what she believes in. Stands up against injustice. She doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer, when she can see a better solution. She gives herself so her family can thrive. She takes her friend to the doctor if she is afraid. Her love is unconditional.

She cries when her kids are victorious. SHE IS HAPPY WHEN HER FRIENDS DO WELL. She is happy when her friends do well. She is glad when she hears of a birth or a wedding. HER HEART IS broken when a next of kin or friend dies. But she finds the strength to get on with life. SHE KNOWS THAT A KISS AND A HUG CAN HEAL A BROKEN HEART.

There is only one thing wrong with her …..”She forgets what she is worth “.woman

Why do we light a lamp ?

  • Indian culture is admired and respected all over the world for its beauty and depth
  • Almost every Indian custom has either a scientific, logical, historical or spiritual significance
  • In almost every Indian home, a lamp is lit daily before the lord we worship. In some houses, it is lit at dawn, in some twice a day-at dawn and at dusk
  • Inaugrations and auspicious occasions commence with the lighting of the lamp, which is often maintained right through the occasion
  • Light symbolizes knowledge. Knowledge removes ignorance just as light removes darkness. Knowledge supports all our actions whether good or bad.
  • The traditional oil lamp has a spiritual significance. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes vaasanas and negativity and the wick- the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the vaasanas get slowly exhausted and the ego too finally perishes. The flame of a lamp always burns upwards.

We should acquire knowledge which takes us towards altitude. A single lamp can light hundreds more lamps. Similarly a man with good knowledge can guide many more. Knowledge does not lessen when shared with others. On the contrary. It increases on giving or sharing with others. It benefits both the receiver and the giver.

  • While lighting the lamp, recite the mantra just loud enough to be heard by your own ears.

Deep Jyothi Parbrahm- Deepa Sarv Tamo Apha

Deepain SaddhyateDeepo Namostute

  • I pray to the dawn/dusk whose light is the knowledge which removes the darkness of ignorance.
  • Thus lighting the oil lamp, contains a wealth of intellectual and spiritual meaninglamp

Anger Mnagement

Anger is endogenous disease in human beings . It is a short-lived madness which begins with blunders , repentance and dangerous consequences . It breeds hatred, revenge and enmity among different communities. Anger flares up with slight instigation or provocation. Anger mostly is without any rhyme or reason but seldom with genuine one. It is meaningless arrogance imbibed in us and is one letter short of danger.anger

Verse from Bhagvat Geeta says :

From attachment of worldly materials, desire and lust are born

From anger comes delusion

From delusion loss of memory is born.

From the loss of memory , our intelligence, friendship and finally the mankind gets destroyed

Medically, it has been proved that people with “ Anger Syndrome” are very much prone to hypertension and related ailments. Our body language, facial gesture, our voice, attitude as a whole undergoes a drastic and metamorphic changes. As a result, negative vibrations and thinking set in our mind which build up to the state of anger. It is difficult to imagine the men who are alcoholic or addict ill-treating their families resulting in domestic violence. Such persons lose ethical , moral and physical value in the society.

Anger is just like a hurricane storm which blows out our lamp of wisdom. It is a violent emotion which rises , surges like a sea wave and completely submerges us damaging our sense and paralyses our faculties.

On the other hand, who says that this world does not need angry persons ? We do need angry persons for a genuine cause ! Anger , some believe is a cleansing agent by which negative and toxic feelings inside our system get off-loaded. Anger is justified at times, if done for a good cause. For instance, a woman’s modesty is targeted in the public place (a normal scene in metro cities) by the hooligans, where the so-called urban educated elite people watch and enjoy the scene ! In such situations , one can really be aggressive and violent to charge the culprits in order to save such victims. So only few people demonstrate “ Righteous Anger” in “Right Time” at “ Right place” for a “ Right Cause”. Parashuram’s anger was justified as he could wash-of-criminal despots from the society at latge.

The various parameters that induce or provoke anger in human beings are(1) Getting irritated when things which do not happen as per the expectations.(2) Getting frustrated if events are not happening fast enough (3) Having grudges against persons who have wronged, humiliated and insulted you.(4) Hating people associated with evil mind. For all the above provocating factors of anger, a lot of patience , positive thinking , mental balance is needed with no immediate reaction to the incident. Sant Eknath’s popularity was at its peak in his time . But some influential rich people like Zamindars of the village did not like his popularity. They started humiliating and insulting Sant Eknath by splitting on his face whenever he comes out of his bath from the river side . But on the other hand , Santji maintained cool and used to go again for the bath. This process continued till the prejudiced Zamindars were tired of this act and gave in to Santji and apologized for their nasty act.

There are many techniques and strategies that can be adopted to containand mitigate anger. Firstly, one should not react immediately to the but wait for 24 hours with patience when things get cooled down. Such waiting with oatience will surely dampen the amplitude of “ Bad Temper Spirit” as we gain more time. If you are conscious enough to delay the wave of anger without any ego, the wave will vanish ! So a good time-lag between angry action and its reaction will surely save from unfortunate situation.

Forgiveness is another sentimental and psychological tool to subside the anger of any opponent which nourishes love and affection. Forgiving does not mean you are surrendering or yielding to your angered opponent but allowing his anger to pass over smoothly like a cool sea breeze! There is a gain of psychological and moral advantage due to forgiveness . If a person possesses good control of mind , forgiveness and patience under all situations , he is sure to conquer this world. We need to handle ourselves by using our mind and control the angry person with love and affection.

In trying situations , meditation provides a physiological response to your anger mitigation. There is a strong negative relation between a good meditation and the intensity or strength of anger.

Another mitigation technique for anger is that the object that causes anger  in you may either be removed or your attention should be diverted from it. Practising regular yogic asanas, pranayam, eating Satvic  food, meditation, yog nidra , consuming no tobacco and alcohol, hearing melodious music etc will have a soul healing touch and soothing effect to your mind and body. Enmity and hatred is buried deep within. From that anger wavers the mind resulting in existing violence through indriyas .  by practicing spiritual surmons in our daily life, we are sure to mitigate the ill -will delving deep within one day to make our life serene and calm. In the alternative , our practice not to let violence percolate in indriyas will make one triumphant over anger.

Five Ways to Conquer Worry

Devastating as worry seems to be in the lives of many of us but there are a number of simple ways of dealing decisively with this problem.worry free

They call for efforts and determination. But encouraging results soon appear.

Here, then , are some of the ways in which we can begin to deal with the worry in our own lives.

  1. Tackle worry adventurously . Be glad you have something to worry to worry about. This may sound non sense, but it is not.

It is no use to a worrier, “ There’s nothing to worry about “. He simply won’t believe you. Even if you managed to convince him that a particular issue was not worth the worry , he would soon find something else.

That is his nature , at present. It is his whole attitude towards worries which needs adjusting. What he really needs to be convinced about is that the real trouble is not in the circumstances about which he is worrying, but in himself.

To convince him of this is just as difficult as making him believe there is nothing to worry about. Here is the way. Let him accept the fact of his worry and the thing he is worrying about.

Once having faced this fact, let him also see that it may be a means either of depression and defeat or of inspiration and victory.

Everyone faces problems and difficulties, but some people regard them as sources of fear, worry and frustration, while others regard as challenges and opportunities.

It is as simple as that. Shall we defeat this circumstance which confronts us or shall we allow is to it to defeat us ?

Life is fraught with problems for all of us. We tend to envy the other man , but there is no doubt at all that he also has his particular problems of which we know nothing.

The sooner we come to terms with this inevitability of the demanding nature of life , the better. It is an adventure . It is a battle.

To accept its challenge to use its difficulties to bring into play the finest qualities within us, is the surest way of dispelling worry and anxiety.

  1. Tackle worry imaginatively. In tackling troubles adventurously , we need to hold actively in the imagination a picture of ourselves as we desire to be.

Any kind of self-improvement is immeasurably helped forward by this simple but effective method.

Constantly picturing ourselves as confident , worry-free , optimistic helps to fix those qualities in us.

The power of imagination positively and rightfully used is a great character –moulding force . Nowhere perhaps are its effects so startling obvious as in dealing with this matter of worry.

There is not , however , one single way of dealing with worry , one single weapon for fighting the enemy. The effectiveness of our victory will depend on the cumulative effect of a variety of weapons.

  1. Tackle worry actively We must do something about our worries in a positive and practical manner. Action is needed.

Most worries afflict us in those times when we are inactive. We have time to think and brood and so worry takes that opportunity of playing havoc with us.

Actively does not mean work alone. Hobbies come into the picture here, too. They have a great therapeutic value.

Many a busy executive and professional man would find his worries disappearing and the effectiveness of his work improving if only he would recognize the value of recreation, of some absorbing, creative hobby.

Our activity in play as well as in work is one of the ways in which we can do battle with our worries.

  1. Tackle worry immediately . Often the worry which keeps us awake at night could have been                                                       avoided by having done something that day which we unwisely put off till tomorrow.

Many things we worry most about in anticipation-an examination, a difficult interview, an uncongenial task- prove , when we actually got down to them , not half as bad as we imagined they would be.

So , while certain things obviously have to wait their turn (we cannot, for example, sit an examination a fortnight before the time) there is clearly an advantage in tackling at once those things which can so tackled which worry us.

  1. Tackle worry systematically . Normal Vincent Peale suggests that certain strategy must be used in the campaign against the habit of worry.

He uses the analogy of a tree which men cut down on his farm. He expected them to start by cutting through the main trunk near the ground.

Instead, they put up ladders and started  snipping off the small branches , then the larger ones , and finally the  top of the tree.

Dr. Peale’s point is that “ the vast tree of worry which over long years has grown up in your personality can best be handled by making it as small  as possible “.

Cutting the smaller branches will have developed our skill and confidence for dealing with the larger ones.

Indeed, in that word confidence is one of the great secrets of our conquest of worry.

To know that the victory can be ours is the greatest single step we can take towards that conquest.

Ten ways to overcome : Stress, Anxiety and Fear

1. Positive Attitude plays a very vital role for leading life happily and peacefully. Your attitude has control to change your life. We should learn/try to have positive attitude under all circumstances.

2. Do not anticipate/imagine troubles to come . On the one hand future happenings are uncertain and on the other , it is uncontrollable. Whenever trouble comes , it never comes alone. It always brings along with it the strength to solve and bear the same.

3. Don’t worry for past and future as past is gone and has value like cancelled cheque, future is uncertain like Promissory Note which may be encashed or not. Try to learn to live in present which is like cash in hand. We should try to make our present life comfortable and peaceful as far as possible.

4. Grow in the spirit of forgiveness  and do not cherish grudge against any person who might have hurt you mentally/physically/financially. We should have spirit to forgive before forgiveness is asked . Whenever any mistake is committed by you, don’t hesitate to ask for forgiveness. FORGET & FORGIVENESS is the best way to have control over stress, worry and fear.

5. We should learn the art of Gratitude . We should show gratitude whenever we are given anything , even advice by anybody. We should always have thanks in our mind/ heart for God who has given and giving everything to us.

6. Develop healthy sense of Humour because humour and stress never go side by side. Lughter / Smile is must. It is a physical/mental/spiritual tonic.

7. Taking care of Breathing is must because breathing and thinking go together and has continuous connection with the mind. While taking in breathing tummy should come out and taking out tummy should go inside.

8. Have full Faith in caring and be grateful to God, who is our father and mother and never harm us. Complete faith in God gives strength to bear happiness and sorrow.

9. Learn to practise Silence (Personal Quiet Time) – Sitting in silence without hearing noise is just like doing meditation or thinking spiritually which paves the way to overcome stress, worry and fear.

10. Helping others is the biggest stress . We should dedicate ourselves to the service of society and try to mitigate the sufferings of human beings and other living sects. If we want to live happily for whole life, we should have the spirit to help other needy human beings and other sects.

Summary : Thinking positively , eating slowly, having regular exercise with walking as much as possible and never carrying guilt in mind with spirit of helping others and having full faith in God with attitude full of forget and forgiveness along with the spirit of gratitude will never allow Stress, Worry and Fear to come near to usfear

Hazards of excessive eating

Human body like an engine needs fuel for energy which it has to generate in the course of its physiological functions. The work done by human body like any other living organism is mechanical and biochemical . The fuel for the production of this energy is food. Food has to be digested , absorbed and broken down into simple substances which are utilized to build body tissues as well as to produce energy.

Man is the highest evolved animal in nature. So far as animals are concerned, they know their food by instinct. They also know , to a considerable extent, what to eat. The quantity of food taken by them is governed by their appetite which in turn is regulated by the energy needs as well as by storage requirements. Tastes do play some part in the food intake by higher animals but primarily it is the appetite and instinctive selection of food. Therefore, qualitatively and quantitatively the food intake depends on the physiological requirements. This is fairly true of animals in their natural habitat uninterfered by human influences. Of course , it depends upon the availability of food. Also, animals do not stick to regular food timings and there are no significant compulsions in eating as found in man.

The primitive man ate mostly according to his instinctive requirements. Gradually , however , with development of working , discoveries of varieties of food and the evolution of society , many extraneous factors started playing significant role in human dietary habits. Our ancestors had to exert a lot in their daily life. With the advent and advancement of civilization , the expenditure of energy became less and less and food habits started developing with more dependence on taste and social eating . The economic environment played a strong role in the qualitative and quantitative parameters of food intake.

The main items of food , technically speaking can be said to be proteins, fats, carbohydrates , vitamins & minerals. Out of these , proteins act as tissue builders of the body; fat act both as fuel as well as energy storage depots. They also act as carriers of certain important fat soluble vitamins . The cabohydratesare mainly responsible for production of energy. All these types of food can be utilized by the body to produce energy. The body proteins are the last to be utilized in the process of drawing on the tissue resources. A deficiency in proteins in diet , leads to muscle wasting as well as breakdown of body resistance to infection and other diseases including hormones deficiencies and anaemia. Minerals in small quantities are also essential in the electrical processes taking place on the outside and inside the cellular structure.

However , with the development of economy , industrialization and consequent affluence in many developed and developing countries, the circumstances have changed. Formerly, many lives used be lost  due to insufficient food intake. Now, in many affluent countries, more people are dying due to over eating than by under nourishment.

How does this all happen ? For the answer to this question we have to look at the pattern of modern affluent life. Sedentary habits of people have increased with the increase of sedentary occupations. Modern transport facilities have obviated the need for the long distance walking or even short distance walking. People will wait for a bus or a lift for considerable time rather than walk a few blocks or climb a storey or two. With the advent of machine age , manual work has been reduced. Eating habits have changed and with them have been evolved rich food dishes , which cater to the palate than to the needs of the body. The manual worker used to require much food as compared to the intellectual sedentary worker.

Eating rich food has become a status symbol and gradually  the appetite of affluent people gets adjusted to intake of larger quantities of food. Even this in itself is undesirable but to go a step further , the qualitatively proportion of food ingredients also gets  disturbed.

Let us deal with the over intake of food. This results in gain of weight and obesity. Apart from inconvenience in day to day functioning of an individual , lethargy and loss of useful man hours to the society , the life span of an over weight person is shorter. This has been amply proved by statistical assessment of large population groups. Disease like hypertension , diabetes , arthritis , gout and digestive disturbance go hand in hand with excessive weight. Injuries like fractures , operations and even healing of ordinary wounds are also hazardous in obese (fatty) personsexcess eat

Keep Diabetes at Bay

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, not a disease. This is due to insufficiency of insulin production by Beta Cells of islets of langerhans of the vital organ ” Pancreas “.

There are two types : IDDM (Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) NIDDM (Non-Insulin Depenedent Diabetes Mellitus)

Diabetes can occur to anyone and at any age- Children to adults. Child diabetes is called Juvenile Diabetes. Normally it occurs in adolescence after 35 to 40 years of age.

SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES

People with NIDDM are generally asymtomatic. Its symptoms are extreme thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, delayed healing of wounds, impotency, infection due to low resisitance, feeling of tiredness or weakness, confusion and itching especially in unexposed parts of the body. However ,all symptoms do not appear in concurrence.

COMPLICATIONS

If blood sugar remains high and untreated, it can cause damage to the blood vessels and nerves, heart disease , kidney failure and also foot problems. Circulatory disturbances are quite coomon giving rise to knee joint pains and numbness in the extremeties.

Low blood sugar is also dangerous causing hypoglasmic effect and later coma (Diabetic coma) . Constipations is another major problem. So it has paramount importance to keep blood sugar always under control. The normal blood sugar values are :

Fasting                around +/- 90

Post Lunch         around +/- 130

Random              around +/-  75

The only solution is proper diet and daily practice of yog.

First priority is to observe the diet, which plays major role.

Food for thought : Take food (diet) as a medicine . Food is classified as Rajsic, Tamsic, & Satwik. The Satwik clicks well. Whatever you eat, less and live more.

Food should be masticated well before swallowing which improves digestion.

Measured , restricted diet, same quantity is to be taken daily and timely. Better half-cooked vegetable be taken, more especially leafy vegetables.

Coffee or tea should be avoided as far as possible. Sweets, chocolates , coconut, fats and dairy products should be avoided. Roasted food and dried fruits should also be avoided. Cooked food should be taken twice daily. Chapati prepared of wheat , gram and barley in equal quantity mixed with smashed green leafy vegetable would be useful. Third time a seasonal fruit can be taken alongwith buttermilk. Buttermilk should be of medium consistency neither thick or thin. Avoid smoking and alcohol which would precipitate. Do not take water in between meals but take half-an -hour before or after. Take salads before meals to minimise water intake. Salads include cucumber, karela, tomato (without seeds) , cabbage, salad leaves, leaves of dhaniya, spinach, raddish, carrot, onion, etc. Relax while you eat , slow down and chew your food fully. Do not be in a hurry. Urination after meals is very useful for health.

Fruits to take :  Orange, Black Jamun, Guava besides mosambi and apple

To avoid : Custard apple, mango, sapota,, banana, figs and grapes . Fruits , not juice to be taken regularly for better health and to avoid constipation.

Daily sufficient water is to be taken. Take regularly one spoon methi seeds with warm fresh lemon water mixed with half spoon of honey while chew 12 to 15 black pepper seeds to reduce obesity. Try to take 50 gms of raw carrot which contains insulin like hormone Tocokinin.

Diabetics should follow the instructor carefully to do as many asanas as possible and in particular the following asanas :

Surya Namaskar, Navasana, Janushirasana, Konasana, Ardhmatsyendra asana, Padothanasana , Halasana, Matsyasana with perfection for maintaining excellent health. Following pranayama may also be added to get excellent result :

Agnisar, Kapalbhati, Bhramri, Sheetli, Deep – long breathing, Anulom-Vilom

Quest In Time

There are so many subjects and sciences , but we can get proficiency only in one or two of them in our life time. From the time immemorial, there has been a race against time. So all the endeavours were made to reform the journey of life as easy , comfortable and also worthwhile . As the saying goes , ” A stitch in time saves nine ” . Who says tomorrow never comes, although every moment which passes can never be retrieved ? Just as we grow old, yet the span of life gets shorter. Time is the most unpredictable thing and treads its own course. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Since nothing but change is constant as the whole universe is in a dynamic state , as the earth is revolving around the sun and on its own axis, making day and night while the moon is moving around the earth keep waning and waxing causing the high tides in the sea. It is the quality of time and how we utilize it, which matters most. Just see between- history and mystery – there is the only chemistry ie instant reaction. Past is our experience and we need to initiate in the present to secure our future mission. Tomorrow coming from the oblivion approaching the present and turning into the past. The measure of time starts from split second, minute, hour, day, week, fortnight, month, year, deacade, century, era and to generations.

Our life is just to deal with all the different aspects which time offers such as : Sweet or sour, good or bad, twist or turn, hot or cold,up or down etc to form opinions. All such phases do happily come one after the other and we are to face them, since with no friction or challenge there can be no charm in the struggle. Actually every riddle like job provides us a reason to overcome and learn in the process.

There are seven stages of life such as : Spill, Drill, Skill, Thrill, Bill, Pill and Will. We are to pass through every stage to adjust our attitude and outlook while maturing. The bliss of life is to do our duty and that too well-done in time. Every day, the dawn brings so much fresh aroma and hope. The ambience creates spectacular scenery of natural bounties. While the day never changes, the date and time does. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. All the grace and fun will be lost if we stop trying to improve or not curious enough to excel. Enjoy the sportsman spirit and never give in but try to do even better. There is so much scientific progress in every field with more features being added to the electronic devices. So add some spice of wit and wisdom to avoid the boredom of life. Smile a while on ourselves just by recalling some old anecdotes to enjoy good health and retard the ageing process. According to an English saying ” A man does not become matured enough before the age of 80 years so one can feel even younger below that age”. We think either of the past or worry about the future , but do not attend to the present and so just miss the train of opportunity. We are to discover our talents and prompt our skills which otherwise remain latent. The main purpose is to bring out the full potential and dispel ignorance. Punctual practice in any discipline can lead us to achieve our goal. If we plant a seed today, it will become a big tree after a few years and so it will become a good amount if we invest in a recurring deposit scheme today. As present is the only offer so try to be creative in the moment. We need to be smart, active and ever ready to pick up any thing good and useful from anywhere and at any time. Life is a stage and we are to perform sincerely. It is our choice and not change that influences our future. So we can be as happy as we wish to be. We should do our best and leave the rest on the Almighty for His grace as well as the outcome. We are to find the purpose and the means will follow. A right step taken at an appropriate time ensures a hundred percent win situation.

There is a sea of change in the last twenty years with every thing going fast-paced , be may it fast foods, speedy trains or supersonic jets. Now it is quite possible to have breakfast at Paris, Lunch in London and dinner at Chicago within a day, thanks to the difference in global timings. Striving on our consistent efforts , we just can find the spring in the deserts. The real purpose remains to save on time , space and energy to make life more enjoyable. So be more specific and smart while attending to the present instant to explore something really new as the wings of time are flying high to fascinate and adore the virtues of current phenomenon.beautiful life

Satkaryavad – The Yogic Philosophy

Satkaryavad is the oldest philosophy from Bharat. A better philosophy than this has not emerged since the vedic times. This is a scientific philosophy. Satkaryavad is based on the principle that whatever we see in this world is only an effect and not the cause. The ultimate reality is in fact the cause. This cause can be known and understood. It can be experienced. It cannot be seen in the form of picture, nor it can be received in the form of object. The objects which we see are indeed the means to know the ultimate cause. A seeker employs suitable methods to find the ultimate cause and thereby he gets established in the self and achieves bliss.

The philosophy of Satkaryavad inspires us to rise from individuality to universality , from finiteness to infiniteness and from humanity into divinity. The Yog philosophy presents the practical and action related description of the Satkaryavadi philosophy. The theoretical aspect of Satkaryavad is known as Sankhya . Its practical aspect is called Yog. Sankhya deals with the knowledge which makes us aware of the cause effect relationship of Satkaryavad. Yog helps us acquire that knowledge . Indeed , Sankhya and Yog represent the core of entire Bhartiya philosophy.

Yog is not restricted to only as ones pranayam and dhyan. It is in fact a way of living of wholesome life. By adopting Yogic way of life, a person brings all round development in his personality viz physical, mental, intellectual, emotional , social, aesthetic, moral and spiritual.

Yog darshan of Patanjali has one hundred and ninety five aphorisms. The adoption of even a few of them is sufficient for a better life. Even the religions like Jainism and Buddhism also adopt yog techniques. Yog darshan contains the statement of principles, placing more emphasis on the verification of these statements. It is not necessary to accept them as dogmas. Yog prescribes spiritual practices which when adopted leads to realization of these principles.

Yogic philosophyy accepts that there is a suffering in the world. Why suffer ? Find its cause. It says that it is not possible to uproot suffering unless its cause is found and removed. Indeed ” the cause of suffering is avidya (nescience) ”. If avidya is destroyed, suffering can be removed, otherwise it will remain the matter which and how many techniques we use for its removal. Yog identifies five sources of distress. Patanjali Yog Sutra states :

” Avidyasmitargadveshabhiniveshah Panch Kleshah ” (Y.S.2/3). These five kleshas are avidya, asmita, rag, dvesh and abhinivesh. Of all these , avidya is considered as the root cause of other four. It is indeed avidya to accept non-eternal as eternal , impure as pure, to seek happiness inthose objects which cause unhappiness and to search self for non self.

Swami Vivekanand said that every soul is potentially divine. The goal of life is to manifest this divinity within by controlling nature externally and internally. The aim of Yog is to elevate the atma so high that it becomes one with Parmatma. Sun is the eye of all being. Yet it is now affected by the defects of the eyes. Similarly , even through Parmatma (Super soul) is the atma of all beings. He is not affected by the afflictions of the mind, chitt and bodies of the individual beings. This is stated in the upanishads and also by Maharishi Patanjali who says that He is pure and holy, manifest only through a medium.

The attributes and defects of the medium through which He appears is routinely attributed to Him. Fire has neither good nor bad smell , yet if we put incense in fire , it creates nice fragrance. The presence of leather in the fire creates foul smell. Smell is not the property of fire. It is the property of the fuel to fire. In the same manner, we attribute to atma, the qualities of chitt which is only a medium of manifestation. When chitt becomes pure, Atma appears pure as well. Therefore , all spiritual practices are only for the purpose of purifying chitt.

The splendour of the entire world we see is ‘atma’. Tulsidas writes :-

Arb kharab lo dravya hon udai asta hon raj

Tulsi jyon nij maran hoi ave kahin kaj

We may be offered the kingdom of land covered from sunrise to sunset and we may be provided with immense wealth. If at the same time, our life is taken away, what good would that kingdom and wealth do for us ? There is an incidence in Upanishads . Rishi (seer) Yagyavalkya had acquired enormous wealth as reward from kings. In order to prepare for his sanyas , he divided his entire property between his two wives, Maitreyi and Katyayani. Katyayani accepted her share. But Maitreyi began to think: We are beautiful , obedient, able, rich and have good disposition , yet our husband is leaving us. He must be leaving us for some better means of happiness. When asked by her, Rishi confirmed that he was indeed leaving for greater happiness. Will the wealth give her immortality, Maitreyi said no, but it will provide you means of comfort. Maitreyi then decided to forego wealth and learn the secret of immortality. Rishi Yagyavalkya was impressed. He praised her, found her worthy of receiving knowledge of the principle of reality which he described to her –

” atmakamaya idam Sarvapriyam bhawati ”

Our love for this world is due to atma. WE do not love this body after atma leaves it. According to Tulsidas , the entire splendour of the world becomes useless if it is given to the body in exchange for atma. The body is useful only if it is graced by atma, which is full knowledge. Atma comes first. The rest of the world is for its use. We should reserve the right to use the wealth but not to own it. When we exercise the right to use wealth , we enjoy it without fear or worry. When we exercise ownership of it, we begin to fear and worry. Ownership is an illusion. Right to use is reality. This indeed is the teaching of Yogdarshan. Whatever we see is for enjoyment and fulfilment of atma. Use it for enjoyment and emancipation. Our welfare lies in realising the reality ie atmanubhuti. This indeed is the message of yogdarshan for mankind.soul_body
