Meditation

Meditation is a method of leading a happy, peaceful, harmonious and balanced life. The simpest form of meditation is to sit silently in some corner of the house and concentrate on any object or on one’s own self, or simply on one’s breathing.

There is nothing religious, communal, spiritual or metaphysical about meditation. There are no rituals, rites, or dogmas attached to it; nor is a prior belief necessary for its practice. Any person Hindu, Muslim. Christian or Sikh can practise it without making any compromises.

Meditation helps all and is useful atleast in two ways. It sharpens one’s mind and enhances and grooms one’s personality and changes his perception of life. It stimulates a person from within and helps in personal as well as professional life. It reorients man and is the key to positive and clear thinking. Meditation cleans and purifies the mind. It is like cleaning and wiping the car’s wind screen before taking out so that one can see ahead clearly.

A ” balanced mind is necessary to balance the unbalanced mind of others”. A balanced mind helps in interacting better with others.

There are various types of meditation such as Transcendental Meditation , Vipassana, Vishvas Meditation.

In Kathopanishad , Nachiketa, son of Vajasrava, asked Yama to impart him the secret knowledge of life and death . Yam the prime controller of human destiny, explained the sublime facts by comparing man with a chariot, saying ” Consider that ( Human) body is a chariot. The traveller in the chariot is the soul. Intellect is a charioteer ( Sarathi, driver) and the mind is the rein. The senses are the horses and the senses objects are their roads” ( Shlokas 1,3,2 and 1,3,3). If one has unrestrained mind then his senses become uncontrollable like the wicked horses of a chariot. Cosequently , he never attains the goal and gets into the cycle of births and deaths. But he who is intelligent, everpure and with the mind controlled reaches the end of the journey.

Now even if we do away with the concept of soul, still we can compare man with a vehicle. Extend the metaphor a little further by drawing a parallel between leading a balanced and harmonious life with efficient and skilled driving. For smooth and flawless driving two things are absolutely necessary. First, the physical condition of the car must be road worthy. It is the job of the driver to make sure that fuel and other necessary requirements for smooth driving are met properly . Secondly , the driver who moves and monitors vehicle must be skilled, efficient and confident in driving. This condition is more important than the first.

In man, mind is at the driver’s seat. Since human mind occupies an important place , it must be calm, cool and balanced in every circumstance.

Any body can learn and perform meditation . By practising it continuously one becomes master of his ownself and this moves from tension to tranquility.
