  • Energy giving foods : This group includes food rich in carbohydrates,like cereals and their products,starchy roots and tubers and sugar,and those rich in fat like nuts,fats and oils. Therefore , the energy in our diet is mainly contributed by this group. Cereals and nuts in addition to energy,contribute significant amount of protein,minerals and B-group vitamins. Fats and sugars,beside being energy dense foods add to the palatability of the diet.
  • Body building foods : This group includes foods which provide proteins that are important for tissue building and maintenance. Foods of animal origin like milk and milk products,eggs,meat,fish and poultry provide proteins of good quality. As these proteins contain all the essential amino acids in right amounts and proportions needed by the body,they have a higher biological utilization. Plant protein foods like pulses legumes,nuts and oil seeds , on the other hand,have a relatively inferior quality protein. The biological utilization of these proteins is lower as they are deficient in sulphur containing energy, Vitamin A, Vitamins of B group and minerals.
  • Protective foods : This group includes foods that provide ample amount of vitamins and minerals for protective and regulatory functions of the body. All vegetables (except starchy roots and tubers included under energy giving foods) and fruits comprise this group. Amongst the vegetables,most of the green leafy vegetables are good source of iron , calcium, Beta-carotene, Vitamin C and dietary fibre . Deep yellow and orange colored fruits and vegetables are particularly rich in Beta-carotene, and citrus fruits in Vitamin C


Sun is the source of creative process on earth. The entire physical world composed of atoms is influenced by the rays of the sun. That is why the sun is worshipped as a maifestation of the God. Modern man,who once disbelieved sun as God, has now started considering him as a potential source for creation on the surface of earth. The diameter of the sun is 8,65,380 miles. Powerful fumes generated by the thermonuclear reaction on the sun travel with a super sonic speed. The quantity of heat generated by the sun is expected to be about 3.7 x 1026 watts. With the development of science of Vastu , man has started constructing houses as per the tenets and thus the positive influence of the five elements viz., earth,water,light,air and sky could be realised. House is the inseparable factor in the life of man. This has been realized and a science is evolved about it, which is called Vastu.

As per Vastu, land extending from east to west is termed as ‘Purush Sthana’ (Masculine site) and is considered as the best, because it is exposed to sun light more prominently . To ensure free and direct access to the morning sun rays,the science of Vastu forbids any type of high structures or tall trees in the eastern side of the building. Further it has been prescribed ,that the vacant space in east must be more than that of west. It is laid  down that tall trees should be planted in the west,to prevent the powerful rays of the sun during the afternoons , causing harm to the human beings and for helping the process of photosynthesis.The effect will be vice versa if the trees are grown in the east. With the growing threat of Green-house effect due to the extinction of ozone layer,the tall trees in west and south have become the only phenomenon,which would come to the rescue of the residents in any house,and at the world at large.

The logic behind the principle of leaving more vacant space in north also is to ensure more quantity of sunlight to the inhabitants during Uttarayana (Northward movement of the sun). The northward movement of the sun during the period of December 21st to June20th is called Uttarayana. The southward movement of the sun during the period June21st to December 20th is called Dakshinayana.

During the Uttarayana period many diseases and ailments , that were prevalent during Dakshiyana,subside and cause less suffering. That is why the wise suggest,that for performing marriages,undertaking construction activity and for other auspicious projects,Uttarayana period proves to be congenial. Bheeshma the staumch warrior and the commander-in-chief of Great Mahabharata battle lied upon the bed of arrows awaiting for the arrival a Uttarayana,and left his last breath on Ekadashi,after teaching all the secrets of jurisprudence,ethics and philosophy to Yudhisthira,on the request of Sri Krishna. The reason behind such logic is the positive impact of the rays of the sun during the period.

In order to derive maximum benefits out of the sun rays during Uttarayana, it is suggested that there should be more vacant space in north and east rather than in south and west. Contrary to it the vacant land in south and west would prove detrimental to the interest of the structures , be it a house,industry,hut or a temple and paves way for its dilapidation.


The environment of a plot is long standing, powerful and often determines the running of a factory. Many factories have Vastu unfriendly locations. The following are the reasons .

  • The human habitations like cities or villages have survived for a long time and therefore must have a favourable Vastu environment. If the Vastu environment had been bad,the habitations would have been abandoned much earlier due to unlivable conditions.
  • The factories have high needs for water as a medium for waste disposal and also as a industrial input. Thus they end up near rivers or lakes with either highly favourable or unfavourable slopes.
  • Large areas are needed for factories. Hence they are exposed to more features of the environment than a smaller factory plot.
  • The agricultural land is often converted to industrial areas. These plots placed on the road side will have large areas on the back. Even if both the sides are developed as factories the open space will be bad for north and east facing factories as they are open spaces on the south and west respectively.
  • Government developed industrial estates have to be developed in large uninhabitated areas. These often turn up to be dried up lake beds. These have very high water tables and unpredictable slopes both of which are unfavourable.
  • The rapid industrialization of an area leads to hazardous construction of temples , electricity installations,pillars and other buildings which affect the neighbouring areas.      Hence the chance for a factory to be built in a Vastu unfriendly locale is very high. Due care has to be taken for choosing the ideal plot before construction.

Dietary Management:

It depends on the severity of the disease, activity and metabolic needs. There are certain general principles for all diabetic diets:


  • The calorie intake should allow the patient to lose or to gain weight as required.
  • The protein recommended in the diet is normal.
  • Carbohydrates should be sufficient to prevent ketosis.

Hypertension or high blood pressure, as it is more commonly known, is regarded as a silent killer. It is a disease of the modern age. The fast pace of life and the mental and physical pressures caused by the increasingly industrialized and urban environment have a role to play in the rise of blood pressure. Blood pressure is the force of blood exerted against the blood vessel walls. Every time the human heart beats, it pumps blood to the whole body through the arteries. The higher the pressure the harder the heart has to pump. Hypertension can lead to damaged organs, as well as several illnesses, such as renal failure ( kidney failure ), heart failure, stroke or heart attack.


Blood pressure is measured with an instrument called sphygmomanometer in millimeters of mercury. The highest pressure in the arteries reached during each heart beat is called systolic pressure, and the lowest between two beats is known as diastolic pressure. The normal level of blood pressure  is below 120/80 mm/Hg. Blood pressure between 120/80 mm/Hg and 139/89 mm/Hg is called pre – hypertension which denotes increased risk of hypertension and a blood pressure of 140/90 mm/Hg  or above is called hypertension.


Symptoms and Causes :


The first symptoms of hypertension may appear as a pain at the back of the head and neck on waking in the morning, which soon disappears. Some of the other common symptoms are dizziness, palpitations, pain in the region of the heart, frequent urination, nervous tension, fatigue, difficulty in breathing, blurred vision and nose bleeds.


In over 90 % of cases , the cause of hypertension is unknown but several factors can increase the risk of developing the condition. Some of the risk factors are :


  1. Age : The risk of developing hypertension increases as one grows older.
  2. Family history : Children born to hypertensive parents are at high risk of developing than those born to non – hypertensive one. A shared environment in the family like diet, exercise, smoking habits etc. may have its implications for development of hypertension.
  3. Obesity : Higher the weight, greater the risk of development of hypertension.
  4. Excess salt intake: Salt contains sodium, which retains the fluid in the body that raises the blood pressure.
  5. Diet : A diet rich in saturated fatty acids and poor in vitamins and fibres increases the risk of hypertension.
  6. Addiction : Consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, smoking etc. are linked with increase in blood pressure.
  7. Physical inactivity : Inactive people have higher heart rate. Higher the heart rate the harder the heart has to work wit each contraction putting a stronger force on the arteries. Lack of exercise increases the risk of being overweight.
  8. Mental stress : Stress leads to increased secretion of cortisol which raises the blood pressure.
  9. Other causes: Kidney disease, diabetes, hormonal problems, use of oral contraceptive pills, pain killers, herbal supplements, drugs, are some of the other causes of high blood pressure.

Dietary Management:


Garlic – Garlic is regarded as an effective means of lowering blood pressure. It is said to reduce spasms of the small arteries. It also slows down the pulse rate and modifies the heart rhythm, besides relieving the symptoms of dizziness, numbness, shortness of breath, and the formation of gas within the digestive tract. It may be taken in the form of raw cloves or two to three capsules a day.


Indian Gooseberry or Amla – Indian gooseberry is another effective remedy for high blood pressure. A tablespoon each of fresh amla juice and honey mixed together should be taken every morning in this condition.


Lemon – Lemon is also regarded as a valuable food to control high blood pressure . It is rich source of vitamin P which is found both in the juice and peel of the fruit. This vitamin is essential for preventing capillary fragility.


Grapefruit – Grapefruit is useful in preventing high blood pressure . The vitamin P content in the fruit is helpful in tonong up the arteries.


Watermelon – Watermelon is another valuable safeguard against high blood pressure . A substance extracted from watermelon seeds  is said to have a definite action in dilating the blood vessels, which results in lowering the blood pressure. The seeds , dried and roasted , should be taken in liberal quantities.


Rice – Rice has a low fat, low-cholestrol, and low salt content. It makes a perfect diet for those

hypertensive persons who have been advised salt-restricted diets. Calcium in brown rice , in particular, soothes and relaxes the nervous system and helps relieve the symptoms of high blood pressure.


Potato – Potatoes, specially in boiled form are a valuable food for lowering blood pressure . When boiled with their skin , they absorb very little salt. Thus, they can form a useful addition to a salt-free diet recommended for patients with high blood pressure. Potatoes are rich in potassium but not in sodium salts. The magnesium present in the vegetable exercises beneficial effects in lowering blood pressure.


Parsley – Parsley is very useful in high blood pressure. It contains elements which help maintain the blood vessels, particularly, the capillaries. It keeps the arterial system in a healthy condition. It may be taken as a beverage by simmering 20gm of fresh parsley leaves gently in 250 ml of water for a few minutes. This may be drunk several times a day.


Rauwolfia – Among the herbs, rauwolfia is the best remedy for high blood pressure. Alkaloids of this drug, which have a direct effect on hypertension, have been isolated and are being widely used by practitioners of modern medicine, but they have certain unpleasant side effects which the drug, taken in raw form, does not have. Practitioners of the Indian system of medicine have, therefore , preferred to use the root of the drug in a powdered form. Half a teaspoon of this drug , taken thrice a day, is very effective in hypertension.


Vegetable Juices – Raw vegetable juices, especially carrot and spinach juices, taken separately or in combination, are also beneficial in the treatment of high blood pressure. If taken in combination,300 ml of carrot juice and 200 ml of spinach juice should be mixed to make 500 ml or half a litre of the juice,and taken twice daily, morning and evening.


Dietary Calcium and Potassium –Recent studies have revealed an important link between dietary calcium and potassium and hypertension. Researchers have found that people who take potassium –rich diets have a low incidence of hypertension even if they do not control their salt intake. They have also found that people with hypertension do not seem to get much calcium in the form of dairy products. These two essential nutrients seem to help the body secrete excess sodium and are involved in important functions which control the working of the vascular system. Potassium is found in abundance in fruits and vegetables, and calcium in dairy products.


Dietary Considerations –  Persons with high blood pressure should always follow a well-balanced routine of a proper diet, exercise,and rest. Diet is of primary importance. Meat and eggs , more than any other food,cause the blood pressure to rise. The pressure can be lowered and blood clotting diminished by increasing the consumption of fruits,reducing protein intake, and sticking to a vegetarian diet. A natural diet consisting of fresh fruits  and vegetables instead of a traditional diet, helps to get rid of the toxins from the body. Salt should be avoided; in any case, it should not exceed more than three grams or about half a teaspoon per day.


Other Measures- Persons suffering from hypertension must get at least eight hours of sleep , because proper rest is a vital aspect of the treatment. Most important of all, the patient must avoid overstrain,worries,tension,anger,and haste. He or she must develop a calm and cheerful attitude and develop a contented frame of mind.


Vastu Tips for all rooms

The Bathroom

The East sector is best  suited for a bathroom since the beneficial rays of the morning sun fall into the room. The slopes within the bathroom can be towards north and east so that water drains into the north-east of the bathroom.

Master Bedroom

The Southwest sector is for the master’s room. Sleep with your head to the south. Outside the master room, a rock garden can be made. This’ll provide a natural setting as you look out from the window. This room can be occupied by the father or the eldest son of the family.

Children’s (Study)Rooms

Children’s room can be in the West, North or East sector. They can have their beds to the South-west corner of the room. Let them sleep with their heads to the East or West. A soft green light in the night will be instrumental in making them study well.

Guest Rooms

The guest room is ideal in the North-west room. Avoid children in this region,especially boys. This room is also suitable for newly wed couples and for those planning their baby.


The right place for kitchen is the South-east sector of the building. Face the east while cooking . the ovens and the gas stoves can be in the Southeast corner of the kitchen. The alternate place for the kitchen,in case you are not able to have the kitchen in the South-east is the North-west sector of the building. To stimulate appetite have your kitchen walls painted soft pink or orange. As good food is indicative of financial strength, a mirror on the North of Eastern wall of the kitchen will likely help strengthen finances.

Dining Room

East, South or West are for the dining rooms. Stimulate your appetite by painting its walls shades of pink or orange. The dining room can be an independent room or a continuation of the kitchen. The suggested place is West. The dining table, preferably a rectangular one should be so arranged that the master of the house,or his wife or eldest son occupies the South of South-west or West of South-west chair in the room.

Living Room 

Living rooms can be in the North-east sector of the building. Avoid loads in the centre of the living room. An east of North-east entry is preferred with good space to the right as you enter the house.

Prayer Room (Shrine)

Prayer room or your private shrine can be either in the North-east sector or the centre of the house which corresponds to the Brahmsthana. Let the Deity be on the Eastern side. Pyramid shaped roofs can immensely strengthen the room spiritually. Avoid having photos of dead people along with the photos of the Lord… Keep the puja room absolutely clean. Never have the prayer area in the bedroom.

Store Rooms

The granaries can be in the North-west sector. Lofts and attics can be on the South and West walls. Grains that needed for daily use can be in the North-west corner of the granary.


Toilets are to be in the North-west of the sector. Avoid them in the centre of the building and the North-east of the building. When it has to be an attached toilet,let it be to the North-west of the concerned room.

The second alternate is the South –east of the building or the room.

General tips for rooms

South-east bedrooms may be avoided. Blue color induces sleep. Green is good for study. Almirahs and lofts can be in the South or West of the rooms. Avoid beds in the centre of the room and under beams. Do not sleep with your head to the North.


Garages can be in the North-west sector. A second choice for garages is the South-east. Avoid your garages or portico in South-west. Let not the garage touch the main building. Let the car face North or East.

Basements and Cellars

The North, East and North-east are ideal for basements and cellars. Avoid basements and cellars in the South-west.

A height equal to or less than the ground floor height is generally recommended.


Staircases may be anywhere except in the North-east and the centre of the pace viz brahmsthana.  However as much as possible prefer them in the South, West or South-west. The space beneath the staircase should not be occupied by anyone.

Verandahs or the first room into the structure
